With finals are right around the corner, I wanted to write about how to begin preparing for finals, in a highly effective way. It will make studying during these two weeks much easier for you.
- Organize – Take time to go through your binders, notebooks and folders for each of your classes and organize them. I know that as the semester picks up the organization I may have once had slowly disappears and my papers get all jumbled up and more difficult to find. So take this time early in December or even late November to organize all your papers for each place. It will be helpful to organize them by category (ie homework, notes, quizzes and exams) and then organize each section chronologically.
- Review Sheet (short) — Write down all the chapters you have covered in each class and write down what topics were in each of the chapters that were covered. After doing this identify which chapters or sections you found the most difficult (so you know what to begin with once you start studying).
- Review sheet (long) – Now that you have written down all the material that you have covered it is important that you go back through each section and begin making your own study sheets. You will do so by writing down the important concepts or equations for each section covered in that class. This sheet will become a great reference for you once you begin doing practice problems. Furthermore this is actually a great way to begin the review process for each section!
- Lastly, take a deep breath and relax.
Once you have all of this done, you will find that it will be much easier to study for your finals come the 2nd week of December. At that time you will be doing practice problems, and reviewing because all the materials you needed to study will be complete.
