Getting A Recommendation Letter
When it comes to getting into college, an internship, or even a new job, we will all need to ask for a letter of recommendation at some point in our lives. While to some this can be an awkward, or uncomfortable task, it doesn’t have to be! I will teach you some tips for when you need to ask for a recommendation letter.
- First you should think about who you are going to ask, this is a very important question because who you ask will determine how well your letter is written. I recommend that you ask someone that knows you well so they can more clearly speak of your character. Don’t just ask a teacher that you received an A in their course – make sure this teacher knows you fairly well. Also note that you can ask people that weren’t your teachers such as coaches, lab mentors, boss from work, etc.
- Ask early! You are probably not the only person that has asked this teacher for a letter of recommendation to get into college.
- Provide them all the materials they need. I like to give the professors I ask for a recommendation letter a folder with my resume, the deadlines of the submission of the letter, envelope with stamp and address filled out if the letter needs to be mailed, or clear instructions on how to fill out the letter if it is online. You want to make their lives as easy as possible when they are writing your recommendation letter.
- Thank them! Don’t forget to send them a thank you note for writing your recommendation letter.
