Guiding You Through the College Applications Process
Most people underestimate the difficulty of senior year and the College Applications. And let me tell you, senior years are stressful.
Senior year marks the end of the familiar and the start of something new. In college, seniors are stressed about finding a full-time job or getting accepted to graduate school while they are simultaneously writing senior theses or creating senior design projects. Senior year of high school is not any less stressful.
The stress of senior year of high school can be summed up in two words: college applications. Most of the stress of college applications arises from the uncertainty of the entire process – the fact that despite all of the time and effort spent on your ten applications, you might not get into college. Well, that’s highly unlikely. The college application process is stressful, and it involves a lot of work, but you will end up getting into a great university.
However, since the application process involves so much work, it is smart to start the process early. That’s why we highly recommend that high school students start the college application process the summer before their senior year of high school.
College Applications: June-August
From June through August of the summer before senior year of high school, students should take their final SAT or ACT if they are not satisfied with their test scores. These tests are usually offered in June and August. Students should also start their Common App essays in the summer before senior year of high school. Parents should hire a consultant to help construct their student’s resume and write the Common App essay.
August
When students go back to school in August, they should ask for recommendation letters and transcripts from their teachers and college counselor. They should also be aware of the fact that colleges will come to visit their schools during the next few months.
College Applications: September
In September, students should submit test scores to colleges and begin the Common App portion of their applications.
College Applications: October
In October, students will set up interviews with colleges that are applicable. These interviews are a great resource to learn more about the schools from alumni.
College Applications: November-December
In November, early college applications are due. Applications will need to be submitted to any colleges requiring early action or early decision deadlines. All regular decision deadlines will need to be submitted by the end of December.
January-May
From January to May, letters will be sent to students from the various colleges to which they applied. Students will also have a chance to apply for scholarships. Some schools will send out additional merit scholarships to students at this time. Pick the school of your choice by their acceptance deadline and celebrate! You’re into college!
