Study Less, Learn More
Do you ever wish that you could spend less time studying, but still get straight A’s? If you think this
statement sounds a bit ridiculous, then allow me to explain. There is this phenomenon in neuroscience
called long-term sensitization, and while this process involves a lot of technical terms and would be
difficult to explain, the basic principle of it is long term retention of information or learning. The way
that our brains achieve this easily is not through a long session of cramming information, but rather
small, spaced sessions of work.
I formally learned this material just a few weeks ago in my neuroscience class. I had always known that
I performed better on my tests when I began some moderate studying several days before, instead
of trying to cram it in all night. Our brains were developed in such a way that they retain information
by not being exposed to it for period of time. In other words, studying your vocabulary words for
20 minutes spaced out over three days will help you memorize more terms compared to cramming
everything in one 2 hour session.
If you find yourself procrastinating often, try a spaced approach to studying: work out a schedule in
your planner to spend small chunks of time each day covering a certain concept. Don’t rely on those
consecutive all-nighters the 2 nights before the test. Plan a week (or more) ahead to spend a little time
on studying every day and you will soon find yourself with more knowledge, and a lot more free time!
