Here Fishy Fishy: Freshmen Year Survival Tips from an EPT Student
We all know what it’s like to be a freshman, except for those unfortunate souls that have yet to experience it. Awkward, naive, and uncomfortable are all ways to describe the freshman experience. The jump from junior high-to-high school is not a jump but a leap across a big pond. I’m here to tell you: its better to have a running start!
Running start? Yes, a few simple things will help prepare yourself for high school. Binders, paper, and pencils will not be enough. You need to be prepared to handle new classes, new people, new places, and new things to do! Going into high school you will think that your brain is a reliable organized planner, but with the slew of extra-curriculars and assignments you should plan on getting a physical planner to stay organized.
Don’t try too hard to fit in. It’s the first sign that you’re not going to make it if you constantly try to please everyone around you. Be yourself; it will get you so much further with people. No one likes someone who pretends to be someone they’re not. If you stay true to yourself then naturally people will want to be your friend. Don’t expect the upperclassmen to accept you immediately; nine times out of ten that is not the case. Upperclassmen thoughts on freshman: “Stay out of my way fish!” and, “They’re so awkward.” Don’t get discouraged by this. I promise it will get better, before you know it you will be the cool upperclassman.
Overall it’s better if you know yourself when going into high school; not what you want to do when you get older, but what you look for in people. You will make some of your closest friends in high school. That being said, no matter how much your know yourself, you will learn a lot about yourself in high school. Try new things! Art, music, acting, and sports; whatever you want, you may find you’re really good at it. High school is an opportunity worth enjoying. Go into high school with an open mind to meet new people, bright eyes to see new opportunities, and clear ears to hear ‘Freshmannnnn’ ringing down the hallway.
