Review Sheets: Your Best Friend
Have you ever started studying for an exam and felt completely overwhelmed with all the information you need to know (especially when you decided to begin studying the next before said exam)? You probably think to yourself: How am I going to know ALLLLL of this material, there is just too much, what am I going to do! And a small form of panic ensues.
Well I have the perfect solution! My “secret weapon” when tackling problems like these are REVIEW SHEETS. This study habit has saved my life and my grade many a times. In today’s blog post I will be answering two simple questions about review sheets: what are they and how do you make one,
What is a review sheet?
A review sheet contains all the important information of the chapter(s) that will be covered in you exam. Therefore it will contain important definitions, equations, pictures, graph, etc that will most likely be found on your exam. It is all the important information formatted in a concise manner. A review sheet should be short sweet and to the point.
Note that review sheets are very different from note taking (note taking is more extensive).
The great thing about a review sheet is that you can start making one weeks in advance before an exam – and as the semester continues you continue building the information found on your review sheet. However you can also make it the week you are reviewing the information on your exam.
This will be your quick “review sheet” that you can then use to quickly review before your exam begins and you can even use to study for your final exam if you make a review sheet for every exam you take for a class.
How to make a review sheet?
This is where making a review sheet and studying for an exam go hand in hand. When reviewing each section in your math or science text book you write down on you review sheet important concepts or equations that you want to remember or feel like you should know for you exam. As you are making your review sheets you are also doing practice problems or answering questions based on what you have written in your review sheet. This also helps you realize what concepts you are strong and weak on so you can get help before the exam.
Your review sheet is your own… this is not something you will ever hand into your teacher or something that will be graded, so make it your own. My favorite part of making a review sheet is color coding, it makes the presentation of the information pretty and organized. Therefore helps me better understand the information. You can color code based on one color for definition, another color for equations, and another color for things I should “watch out” for in an exam.
You would preferably want to start making your review sheet a week before the exam, or even when you are learning the material for the first time!
Do NOT ever throw out a review sheet after an exam because the accumulation of these sheets will be great for studying for the final.
