How to Approach Finals

Have you ever felt absolutely overwhelmed by the finals? Honestly, no matter what stage of education you are at, whether it is middle school, high school, or college, finals week will always be the most stressful time of the entire year. So how exactly do you survive those few weeks?

The first thing you need to do is stop freaking out and take a deep breath. Look at your schedule and figure out when each exam will take place. Mark those specific dates on your calendars so that you know exactly how many days you have before each test.

After marking the dates, it is essential to make an efficient and most ideal study schedule. If an exam is two weeks away and there is a test coming up in a few days, it makes no sense to stress over the big test way in the future. Focus on what you need to study first, even if it’s easy. Of course, there will be those tough subjects (eg. Biology or chemistry) where there is just a ton of information. For those subjects, it’s smart to start a bit earlier than normal, so that you can study a little bit everyday and leave yourself a few days of cushion for review.

After making the study schedule, it is vital to stick with them. Be sure to study a bit everyday and focus on what matters. Leave some time for study breaks so that you don’t feel burnt out by day three. While studying, be sure to write down any question or problem you may have so that you can ask your teacher or tutor when you see them. Get those problems cleared before the final, because you never know if that exact question will show up on the test!

Finally, how do you study? Consult your book, and use your notes! Work with a friend if that works for you. Having a friend not only motivates you to work harder, but teaching someone a concept is one of the best ways to review your material and understand what areas you need to improve on.

Once the day of the exam arrives, do your best to stay calm. At that point, no matter what you do, just be sure to do your best and leave it at that. Once a test is over, try not to think too much about it so that you are ready to tackle the next exam on the way!
